Our Regions Business...

Good to see that Mitsubishi (MIT) is planning to build a 50,000 square foot factory in Beaver County, Pa.
The “Pittsburgh Business Times” reported in its January 13 issue that MIT is planning to build a factory to manufacture ventilation and air conditioning equipment for passenger trains.  This should be good for Southwest Pa. region in that jobs are being added.  Additionally, it solidifies this region’s base of strong manufacturers in the transportation market including Mitsubishi, Bombardier, Wabtec, Toyo Denki, Ansaldo and others with a presence here. www.bizjournals.com/pittsburgh/

It was also good to see Kennametal President & CEO, Carlos Cardoso, speaking of the importance of manufacturing to this region’s economy.  Cardoso, as reported in all of the local press, is saying that manufacturers have to help change the still prominent view that the manufacturing industry is an old line business with no future.  Instead, he points out that manufacturing is seeing a resurgence and that many of today’s factories with very sophisticated equipment and a highly technical workforce is not anything like the old industry of 30-50 years ago.  As Chairman of Catalyst Connection, I would echo Mr. Cardoso’s sentiment and ask manufacturers to get involved in industry groups in an effort to make sure public policy is advancing the cause of manufacturing and that we are growing the workforce of tomorrow.  Catalyst Connection is an economic development organization whose mission is to advance the performance of manufacturing companies in Western Pa. www.catalystconnection.org
